6 Ways to Prevent Mold Growth on Grout in the Bathroom

Nothing puts a damper on a relaxing bath or shower like seeing mold in the grout. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also be dangerous to your health if inhaled.

The good news is that there are several things you can do to prevent mold from growing in your bathroom grout in the first place. Here are three of the most effective methods.

1. Keep Your Bathroom Ventilated

One of the most important things you can do to prevent mold is to keep your bathroom well-ventilated.

During and after each shower, open up a window or turn on the exhaust fan to help remove any residual moisture from the air.

If possible, avoid hanging wet towels or bathing suits on drying racks that block ventilation devices, as this can create humid conditions that are ideal for mold growth.

2. Clean Your Shower Regularly

Another effective way to prevent mold is to clean your shower regularly. Use a mildew-resistant cleaner on both the tub and shower surround, along with the grout itself. (However, be sure to avoid using ammonia, bleach, or baking soda on your grout.)

Pay special attention to areas where mold is more likely to form, such as corners and around drain plugs. Make sure to rinse thoroughly after cleaning and to allow everything to dry completely before using the shower again.

Additionally, don’t forget to squeegee the shower walls and edges after each and every use to remove excess water.

3. Use Mold-Resistant Products

There are now several mold-resistant products available on the market that can help keep your bathroom grout free of mold.

These include mildew-resistant caulk, mold-resistant paint, and tile sealers specifically designed for use in showers. Applying one or more of these products can provide an extra layer of protection against mold growth.

Ultimately, the best products you can use to reduce mold growth are neutral and diluted cleaners, along with a Magic Eraser when needed. Never use stiff brushes, wire brushes, or heavy cleaners on sealed grout.

4. Hang Wet Towels and Cloths To Dry

Another way to prevent mold from growing on your bathroom grout is to keep damp clothes off the floor. When damp cloths are left on the floor, they provide an ideal breeding ground for mold spores.

Instead, hang these items on drying racks that get plenty of ventilation to allow for quick and effective drying.

5. Have the Bathroom Grout Professionally Sealed

Although tile is non-porous, grout is not, and it can absorb water and soap residue. This creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

Fortunately, there is a way to prevent this from happening: by sealing your grout on a regular basis.

Sealing helps to protect the pores of the grout, making it more difficult for water and soap residue to penetrate. As a result, your grout will be less likely to develop mold growth. For best results, have your grout professionally sealed on a regular basis.

6. Spray Shower Once A Day

To prevent mold from growing on your bathroom grout, spray your shower with a mold-resistant spray once a day. You can also make a very diluted vinegar water solution or neutral Windex solution and use it to wipe down the area after each shower. It will take a few seconds out of your day, but it’s well worth it to keep your bathroom clean and mold-free.

Mold in the bathroom grout can not only be unsightly but also dangerous to your health if inhaled. Luckily, there are several things you can do to prevent it from forming in the first place.

Be sure to keep your bathroom ventilated, clean your shower regularly, and use mold-resistant products where possible. By following these simple tips, you can help keep your bathroom grout looking clean and healthy for years to come!
